Chapter Twenty-Five
And she ran.
She shot down a sidewalk into an intersection, making the center median before lights changed and swift dashing traffic marooned her. Then lights changed again. Three lanes idled anxiously between her and the diner side, but she couldn’t go back. The beyond was splashy as traffic made swerving left turns, whipping water into her hair and eyes. And when that finally quieted, she was cold and too fearful to risk stepping onto the puddling tar. So, there she stood.
She stood long enough for panic to subside and to notice the rhythm of the signaled streams hurtling by. Eventually she could sprint one way or the other, but that meant choosing a side to dart to. And the water was so cold.
