Chapter Twenty-Five
It was set off from the dining areas by vitreous dessert cases. None of the chocolate ones were nearly dark enough to entice but sealed behind crystal were lots of creamy things: banana, lemon, cherry, vanilla: all puffy, swirls and parfait. They sat towered, stacked, and shelved, some in tall transparent tubes turning slowly in a rotation intended to be tempting.
Two other plates overlooked parking. Through one she could make out the long-gone airfield now flattened under malled sprawl. But it was raining. While she watched, the drops grew bigger, fell faster, and finally commingled into swift slanting sheets dashing against the glass.
